Art Festival 865 Bellevue - Nashville

Artists from near, far will showcase work while jazz musician entertains

When Ines Voellinger arrived in Bellevue last year from her native Chemnitz, Germany, she noticed there weren't many opportunities for artists to showcase their work.

But on Sept. 20, local artists will get the chance to display their work to art aficionados at the first-time 865 Arts Festival.

The festival, which will take place at the 865 Bellevue apartments on Saturday, Sept. 20, will feature photographs, sculptures and paintings from artists who are native not only to Bellevue but also from Germany, Colombia and Brazil.

The idea for the festival started with one question from an 865 Bellevue resident: Could we have an art fair?

The answer was yes, and Voellinger, activities coordinator at the apartments, started brainstorming to bring the festival to Bellevue. Voellinger received a lot of feedback from area artists who were waiting for the chance to put their work on display.

Three months later, more than 10 artists' work will be shown, ranging from sculptures made of recycled materials to portraits of children.

"I wanted to create a nice setting for people to come out to look at the artwork and to have a good time," Voellinger said.

To add to the good time other entertainment is planned. Suzahn Fiering, a traveling jazz artist who has visited Barcelona and London, will be performing for guests. In addition to adding her singing and guitar playing to the program, she's looking forward to viewing the art.

"I'm totally looking forward to seeing the art…. It's really nice to see a local event have that," Fiering said.

For Karen Yaniglos, she's enjoying the chance to show off her photography.

"I think it's a great showcase to introduce myself to the community," said Yaniglos, who recently moved to Bellevue after living in Los Angeles, where she worked as a freelance photographer for seven years.

The event will also feature activities to keep the children occupied, too. There'll be painting activities, sculpture-making and painting birdhouses.
